SICK MACHINE

<img src="http://independentstream.podOmatic.com/mymedia/thumb/12804/0x0_1058624.jpg" alt="itunes pic" /><br />This musical episode is in tribute to George Carlin.

Brought to you by wm3.org and bi-polar industries.com

St. Cloud hard-rock group Sick Machine is up and firmly on its feet today with the release of its debut full-length CD "Ready to Burn."

Don't let the term "debut" lead you to think inexperienced musicians. The line-up, featuring Dave Woodward, Zeb Gilbert, Mike Lardy and Chad Gross, has been making music together or in other lineups for more than a decade.

These guys have perfected drive, angst and the power chord.

"Ready to Burn" is what you would get if you put Sick of It All, Nirvana and Queens of the Stone Age in a caldron and scorched it.

Among the 13 tracks on this disc, I don't hear a big rising single, but I do hear a lot of great stuff. "Ready to Burn" likely will fly under the radar of mainstream rock but has the potential to remain high enough to make a respectable dent on the hard-rock music scene.

Songs such as "Endless Dreams" and "Lungs" throw down addictive driving riffs, while "Black Out Sunday," "Intervention" and "Army of Ants" show Sick Machine's purely aggressive side.

Don't expect to see a lot of flashy leads or squealing jams from these guys — that would be too pretty. This is music drenched in rock fit for finding someone to shove.

John has a chillin sense of humor. His music reminds me of the time I was a single/pissed dude while listening to Tom Waits and trying to find some sort of meaning in this messed up world. It was a very short interview but we hope to get John into Westwood Gardens Studios for a future recorded show.

Listen in as we chat with The Slats about local record stores, bands that start with THE. And why do they believe in Timothy McVeigh???
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
A REVIEW

The music of The Slats make you wish this type of music was on the latest guitar hero game. A retro rocking sound that cranks well in your car as you drive around for no reason at all. It's only a matter of time until the hounds come out to the trail hearing The Slats amps roaring a well adjusted tune.

"Call my Telephone" is played from their latest, "Boom Patrol"

TRAP CITY MUZIK GROUP

<img src="http://independentstream.podOmatic.com/mymedia/thumb/12804/0x0_884885.jpg" alt="itunes pic" /><br />Gary Holdsteady interviews three artists from TRAP CITY MUZIK GROUP.

Proving to ya'll that the Minnesota Hip-Hop scene is alive and well here in Minnesowta.

Yes Sir!!

We play six tracks and break you fiends into the good shit.

Recorded at WestWood Gardens Studios.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
BRIEF AUDIO DESCRIPTION

- What the label means to the group.
- Taking shit seriously
- We reveal real names of people in the entertainment industry
- All three artists free style their lyrics into the mic
- Listen in as Gary Holdsteady tries to rap as well
- Props to everyone involved in the game
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ABOUT THE TRAP CITY MUZIK GROUP

AFTER HAVING THINGS SLOW DOWN WITH THEIR PREVIOUS COMPANY, T-BABY & INFY SOUGHT OUT TO FIND OTHER OUTLETS FOR THEIR MUSIC. RIPZ THE HULIGAN ON THE OTHER HAND WAS NOT SIGNED WITH A COMPANY. RIPZ AND T-BABY ARE COUSINS AND GO BACK A LONG WAY WHEN IT COMES TO MUSIC. SPINNING RECORDS AS CHILDREN ON RIPZ'S 45 RECORD PLAYER, HE AND T-BABY WOULD STAY UP FOR HOURS LISTENING TO ALL TYPES OF MUSIC. FROM HIP HOP TO ROCK, SOUL/ R&B TO POP, EVEN BLUES AND JAZZ.

FAST FORWARD TO 2007. AFTER BEING APART FOR CLOSE TO 10 YEARS, T-BABY AND RIPZ BUMPED INTO EACHOTHER AT A LOCAL MINNEAPOLIS OPEN MIC AT DUKE'S NIGHT CLUB. EVER SINCE THAT DAY IN APRIL '07, THE TWO HAVE BRAIN STORMED A PLOT TO TRANSFORM MINNESOTA INTO A HIP HOP HAVEN FOR THE INDUSTRY. WITH INFY COMING IN AS THE PRESIDENT, CO-CEO'S RIPZ THE HULIGAN AND T-BABY HAVE FORMULATED WHAT IS NOW CALLED TRAP CITY MUZIK GROUP LLC.

WITH MIXTAPES SUCH AS 'STILL BIRTH', 'FEATURE PRESANTATION: I 4GOT MUSIC', AND 'OPPERATION INDUSTRY TAKEOVER' THIS TRIO OF THE MINDS PLAN TO TAKE THE WORLD BY STORM! ALONG WITH T-BABY, INFY, AND RIPZ THE HULIGAN, THE LABLE HAS A HOST OF OTHER HARD HITTING ARTISTS THAT ARE JUST AS DANGEROUS AS THE BIGGER NAMES IN THE GAME.

T-BABY, BORN AND RAISED IN MINNEAPOLIS, MN, HAS A BLEND OF SOUTHERN HEART AND A MID WEST FLOW. WITH QUOTES LIKE "I HAVE A NEVER DIE ATTITUDE WITH A 100% GRIND", SHOWS THAT T-BABY WILL STOP AT NOTHING TO GET THE JOB DONE.

SONGS LIKE 'I'M FRESH', 'CANDY APPLE CHEVY', AND 'PAPER STAY STR8' GIVES T-BABY A BRIGHT FUTURE AHEAD OF HIM. T-BABY IS ALSO THE R&B GURU THAT BRINGS A STREET SWAG TO SONGS LIKE 'I CANT GET U OUTTA MY MIND', 'I NEVER KNEW', AND 'WHAT'S THE POINT'.

This is one of the many talented artists that we've had the pleasure to hang with right here at WestWood Gardens Studios.

Sarah's music defines a break through in music. Great lyrics along with cinematic tunes that makes a story up in your head. Fuck that Doritos chick from the super bowl commercial. Sarah Pray is the Independent artist everyone should give a listen to. I also noticed while hearing her performance live here that her pitch was right on. Great emotion.

Thanks to Sarah and Ian Pray for hanging out.

<img src="http://independentstream.podOmatic.com/mymedia/thumb/12804/0x0_631173.jpg" alt="itunes pic" /><br />The Independent Stream Interviews UPSET THE LOCKSMITH here at WestWood GardensStudios.

We play two tracks from his upcoming album The Smithsonion which is being released January 2008. This is a first time exclusive here on the stream.
-----------------------------------------------------
MESSAGE FROM GARY HOLDSTEADY

It was April of 2007 and I was cashing my pay check at a TCF bank. This dude came up to me and wondered if I was interested in purchasing his music. I was expecting a burned album of some sort but this was a real produced album. He introduced himself as "SET THE SMITH" and we talked about music and the hip-hop scene. I told him that getting people as they were leaving the bank was a good selling point and so I purchased his album, NO PAIN. The production was top notch and the lyrics reached out to me as a person. Months later I decided to get him in my studio and learn more about whats to come with hip-hop and Set the Smith.
----------------------------------------
WRITTEN BY SET THE SMITH

I grew up in South Mpls. along with my older brother and sister.My older brother Gage gave my father the idea to bring HIP-HOP to Mpls back in 86 when they assembled a rap group to come off of a record label owned by my father.The group was called THE I.R.M. CREW(Imortal rap masters)I was just 7 years old at the time.The group consisted of 3 M.C.'s. Kel C, (who is also a older brother to me)T.L.C.,and Devastatin D..1 beatboxer that now goes by the name Truth Maze and a D.J. that called himself Cuttin Cal..Needless to say that had a major effect on my musical asspirations as a child.I began beatboxing at 7,doing all the Dougie fresh combinations,eatin up many older so called beatboxers at the time,of course learning from Truth Maze,at The same time I began rhyming.I have since released 4 albums of my own beginning with "Final Notice"in 98,"3-1-79 The Legend of Upset"in 2000,"No Pain"in 2002,and "The Example"in 2005.. My music has since changed an awful lot over the years,with time came growth within myself,that growth now reflects in my music.I don't rap or sing about b*ches,hoes,cars,clothes,or senseless violence.Though in some of my earlier projects I would have to admit that I did here and there,but you would have to understand that I really WAS living that life.Now I'm grown with a son of my own(whom I love dearly)and I now realize the power of influence music has on our youth as well as grown ups who act like children..Don't get me wrong I like nice things as well,cars,clothes,ect.,but i also realize that life is about SO MUCH MORE!!My goal nowadays is to make music to live by,not only when you wanna go out and kick it,but also for when you wanna relax and reflect.Understanding that we all go through unhappy times.What defines us as people is how we apply what we've learned from those situations that caused us to be unhappy in the first place....O.K.,,enough of that bullsh*t!!Turn my joints up and enjoy!!Once again I truely appreciate your support!!Your like crutches to a brotha with 2 broken legs.lol..Thank you. SET THE SMITH. ";

My music has since changed an awful lot over the years,with time came growth within myself,that growth now reflects in my music.I don't rap or sing about b*ches,hoes,cars,clothes,or senseless violence.Though in some of my earlier projects I would have to admit that I did here and there,but you would have to understand that I really WAS living that life.Now I'm grown with a son of my own(whom I love dearly)and I now realize the power of influence music has on our youth as well as grown ups who act like children..Don't get me wrong I like nice things as well,cars,clothes,ect.,but i also realize that life is about SO MUCH MORE!!My goal nowadays is to make music to live by,not only when you wanna go out and kick it,but also for when you wanna relax and reflect.Understanding that we all go through unhappy times.What defines us as people is how we apply what we've learned from those situations that caused us to be unhappy in the first place....O.K.,,enough of that bullsh*t!!Turn my joints up and enjoy!!Once again I truely appreciate your support!!Your like crutches to a brotha with 2 broken legs.lol..Thank you. SET THE SMITH. ";

Listen in as Jeff does a live performance recording from WestWood Gardens Studios.

The band Skittish was my first ever full band interview. The last one was recorded in a coffee shop with loudness from humans and coffee grinders. This time around, we made sure to get it done right this time.

ABOUT BEING SKITTISH AND SUCH

Much like the suburbs from whence it sprang, Skittish is a bleeding, sweating, writhing ball of human nature, bursting at the seems, but ultimately suppressed and packaged in neatly crafted boxes. Songs and suburbs have seedy underbellies to spare.
Skittish masks every bruise and blackened eye with handclaps and harmonies; every well trimmed lawn and uber-catchy melody are woven together by subversive humor and an undercurrent of anarchy. Yes, this is quite ambitious, but anything less wouldn’t matter. And to matter, in this prepackaged world, is an admirable ambition indeed.
The 2004 brainchild of recent college graduate Jeff Noller, Skittish breached-birthed its way into the world through a meltdown of other main-stream rock projects. Noller had played in many soulless pop-rock bands during college, but the always vibrant Minneapolis music scene seemed poised for a change of sound. Wanting to do something different, Noller quit his other bands and retreated to his suburban-Minnesota parents’ basement with Protools on a Mac, and some second-hand instruments to record ‘…from my parents basement.’ This collection of quirky songs, and his passionate live shows, gained the one-man-band local notoriety.

Gary Holdsteady interviews an author for the first time. We're promoting Tom Waters fourth book, If They Can't Take A Joke: Confrontational Humor For The Casual Bibliophile

Featuring music by Minnesota bands Saving One and Everest.
-------------------------------------------------
ABOUT THE BOOK

Critically lauded Buffalo humor writer Tom Waters sharpens his craft with essays to razor precision in his fourth published collection of wickedly subversive and laugh out loud rants, essays, and celebrity interviews. The author reloads his calculated wit on topics like babies, pornography, restaurants, relationships, driving, wrestling, coffee addiction, weight gain, psychotherapy, writers portrayed in film, the eroding laziness of our culture, drive-thrus, cooking, republicans, and the agony of shopping for clothes with women. The collection also reprints some of Tom’s most popular celebrity interviews with author Bret Easton Ellis, comic legends Mike Carey and Brian Azzarello and cult film director Lloyd Kaufman. Waters has enjoyed a rabid cult following among his fans and continues to shock, amuse, and offend with his no-nonsense brand of confrontational rants. Compared as a cross between Andy Rooney, Dennis Miller and Denis Leary, his angst-fueled nonfiction endures as a legacy to the Y generation, an amusing threat to baby boomers, and an inspiration to angry young men the world over. His books and articles have appeared in over four countries and have thus far sold thousands of copies. He’s performed his work on the radio, on stage, and in print for almost twenty years, garnering an award for humor from Columbia University and finding publication in The Buffalo News, ArtVoice, Night Life Magazine, Acid Logic, Film Fax, Too Much Coffee Man Magazine, and The Circle, among others. His last collection, First Person, Last Straw, was described as ’a jolting read’ (Anthony Violanti, Buffalo News) and 'a book that gives as much as it takes from you’ (Brian Bogucki, ArtVoice).
-----------------------------------------------
ABOUT THE WRITER

Tom Waters (31) lives, writes and mutters to himself in Buffalo, New York, where he has lived all of his life. In addition to the book you’re holding in your hand right now, he’s written three other books Born Pissed, Zany Hijinx, and First Person, Last Straw. He wants you to buy them all and re-read them aloud to your friends during slumber parties. He’s currently putting the finishing touches on his fifth book (Slapstick & Superego), starting on his sixth book, writing a weekly column for Night Life magazine (Big Words I Know By Heart), and spending entirely too much time updating his web site, ’Big Words I Know By Heart’ at www.tomfoolery4.wordpress.com. His articles, essays, rants and interviews have appeared in over four countries in print and online in publications such as ArtVoice, Night Life, The Buffalo News, Acid Logic, Too Much Coffee Man, Filmfax magazine, The Circle and The Beast. He’s been writing since the age of 13, and will most likely die with a notebook clutched in his tobacco stained fingers.

THE ICY SHORES

<img src="http://independentstream.podOmatic.com/mymedia/thumb/12804/0x0_631192.jpg" alt="itunes pic" /><br />Interview outside the Varsity Theatre with The Icy Shores. Recorded on 5/10/07 before the Catlick Records Showcase. The sounds of the interview actually make you feel like you're on The Icy Shores of Minneapolis, Minnesota. My recorder sucks balls and I really need to upgrade. Donations???

The Icy Shores are based here in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Some people say it's a mixture of influences ranging from the Afghan Whigs to Radiohead to the Foo Fighters. It's dark and poppy and everything in between.

Their songs poke moodily at love and relationships with blasts of distortion coupled with sweet harmonies and intertwining guitars. The Icy Shores first long-player is called "What You Get and How You Get It" and was mixed by audio guru Bryan Hanna (the Hang-Ups, Golden Smog). The end result is an album filled with explosive dark-pop anthems that tightly careen over your senses. Listen to the end of the show for some live Icy Shores from the Catlick Records Showcase that very night!!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This podcast is dedicated to longtime listener and friend, Rusty Rose who lost her husband, Robert J. Dixon from the war in Iraq.
Our hearts and respect go out to all the families and friends that are involved in this shitty war.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Songs played from The Icy Shores first album, "What You Get and How You Get It"

You can buy their album at the itunes music store or else get the album sent to ya from the catlick records online store. All you have to give is ten one dollar bills. Help support the Minnesota local scene.
