UPSET THE LOCKSMITH
December 28, 2007 02:58 PM PST
The Independent Stream Interviews UPSET THE LOCKSMITH here at WestWood GardensStudios. We play two tracks from his upcoming album The Smithsonion which is being released January 2008. This is a first time exclusive here on the stream.
It was April of 2007 and I was cashing my pay check at a TCF bank. This dude came up to me and wondered if I was interested in purchasing his music. I was expecting a burned album of some sort but this was a real produced album. He introduced himself as "SET THE SMITH" and we talked about music and the hip-hop scene. I told him that getting people as they were leaving the bank was a good selling point and so I purchased his album, NO PAIN. The production was top notch and the lyrics reached out to me as a person. Months later I decided to get him in my studio and learn more about whats to come with hip-hop and Set the Smith.
I grew up in South Mpls. along with my older brother and sister. My older brother Gage gave my father the idea to bring HIP-HOP to Mpls back in 86 when they assembled a rap group to come off of a record label owned by my father. The group was called THE I.R.M. CREW(Imortal rap masters)I was just 7 years old at the time. The group consisted of 3 M.C.'s. Kel C, (who is also a older brother to me)T.L.C.,and Devastatin D..1 beatboxer that now goes by the name Truth Maze and a D.J. that called himself Cuttin Cal..Needless to say that had a major effect on my musical asspirations as a child.I began beatboxing at 7,doing all the Dougie fresh combinations, eatin up many older so called beatboxers at the time,of course learning from Truth Maze,at The same time I began rhyming.I have since released 4 albums of my own beginning with "Final Notice"in 98,"3-1-79 The Legend of Upset"in 2000,"No Pain"in 2002,and "The Example"in 2005.. My music has since changed an awful lot over the years, with time came growth within myself, that growth now reflects in my music.I don't rap or sing about b*ches, hoes, cars, clothes,or senseless violence.Though in some of my earlier projects I would have to admit that I did here and there, but you would have to understand that I really WAS living that life. Now I'm grown with a son of my own(whom I love dearly)and I now realize the power of influence music has on our youth as well as grown ups who act like children..Don't get me wrong I like nice things as well, cars, clothes, ect.,but i also realize that life is about SO MUCH MORE!!My goal nowadays is to make music to live by,not only when you wanna go out and kick it,but also for when you wanna relax and reflect.Understanding that we all go through unhappy times. What defines us as people is how we apply what we've learned from those situations that caused us to be unhappy in the first place....O.K.,,enough of that bullsh*t!!Turn my joints up and enjoy!!Once again I truely appreciate your support!!Your like crutches to a brotha with 2 broken legs.lol..Thank you.
