Another interview recorded from City Scene 08 with John Swardson. John has a chillin sense of humor. His music reminds me of the time I was a single/pissed dude while listening to Tom Waits and trying to find some sort of meaning in this messed up world. It was a very short interview but we hope to get John into Westwood Gardens Studios for a future recorded show.

The music of The Slats make you wish this type of music was on the latest guitar hero game. A retro rocking sound that cranks well in your car as you drive around for no reason at all. It's only a matter of time until the hounds come out to the trail hearing The Slats amps roaring a well adjusted tune. Sarah and Ian Pray come over and play songs live here on the stream. This is one of the many talented artists that we've had the pleasure to hang with right here at WestWood Gardens Studios. Sarah's music defines a break through in music. Great lyrics along with cinematic tunes that makes a story up in your head. Fuck that Doritos chick from the super bowl commercial. Sarah Pray is the Independent artist everyone should give a listen to. I also noticed while hearing her performance live here that her pitch was right on. Great emotion. Thanks to Sarah and Ian Pray for hanging out.

The Independent Stream Interviews UPSET THE LOCKSMITH here at WestWood GardensStudios. We play two tracks from his upcoming album The Smithsonion which is being released January 2008. This is a first time exclusive here on the stream.
It was April of 2007 and I was cashing my pay check at a TCF bank. This dude came up to me and wondered if I was interested in purchasing his music. I was expecting a burned album of some sort but this was a real produced album. He introduced himself as "SET THE SMITH" and we talked about music and the hip-hop scene. I told him that getting people as they were leaving the bank was a good selling point and so I purchased his album, NO PAIN. The production was top notch and the lyrics reached out to me as a person. Months later I decided to get him in my studio and learn more about whats to come with hip-hop and Set the Smith.
I grew up in South Mpls. along with my older brother and sister.My older brother Gage gave my father the idea to bring HIP-HOP to Mpls back in 86 when they assembled a rap group to come off of a record label owned by my father.The group was called THE I.R.M. CREW(Imortal rap masters)I was just 7 years old at the time.The group consisted of 3 M.C.'s. Kel C, (who is also a older brother to me)T.L.C.,and Devastatin D..1 beatboxer that now goes by the name Truth Maze and a D.J. that called himself Cuttin Cal..Needless to say that had a major effect on my musical asspirations as a child.I began beatboxing at 7,doing all the Dougie fresh combinations,eatin up many older so called beatboxers at the time,of course learning from Truth Maze,at The same time I began rhyming.I have since released 4 albums of my own beginning with "Final Notice"in 98,"3-1-79 The Legend of Upset"in 2000,"No Pain"in 2002,and "The Example"in 2005.. My music has since changed an awful lot over the years,with time came growth within myself,that growth now reflects in my music.I don't rap or sing about b*ches,hoes,cars,clothes,or senseless violence.Though in some of my earlier projects I would have to admit that I did here and there,but you would have to understand that I really WAS living that life.Now I'm grown with a son of my own(whom I love dearly)and I now realize the power of influence music has on our youth as well as grown ups who act like children..Don't get me wrong I like nice things as well,cars,clothes,ect.,but i also realize that life is about SO MUCH MORE!!My goal nowadays is to make music to live by,not only when you wanna go out and kick it,but also for when you wanna relax and reflect.Understanding that we all go through unhappy times.What defines us as people is how we apply what we've learned from those situations that caused us to be unhappy in the first place....O.K.,,enough of that bullsh*t!!Turn my joints up and enjoy!!Once again I truely appreciate your support!!Your like crutches to a brotha with 2 broken legs.lol..Thank you. SET THE SMITH. ";

The band Skittish was my first ever full band interview. The last one was recorded in a coffee shop with loudness from humans and coffee grinders. This time around, we made sure to get it done right this time.

Much like the suburbs from whence it sprang, Skittish is a bleeding, sweating, writhing ball of human nature, bursting at the seems, but ultimately suppressed and packaged in neatly crafted boxes. Songs and suburbs have seedy underbellies to spare.

DINGUS, MURPHY CLIVE, PLANET STRUCK,KILL SADIE TRIPLE SHOTS THIS IS THE MINNESOTA MUSIC SCENE!!!! DINGUS Dingus was formed in 2000, when the illustrious Jonathan Walters (bass and lead vocals), Parker Thompson (drums and backing vocals), and Sam Beere-Hasman (guitar and backing vocals) all decided to jam together one day in Jonathan's garage. We just like, you know, started playing some covers and stuff like NOFX, Blink 182, and stuff like that. Then we grew our own sound, wrote our own songs, and grew to be like, basically the best band in the world-Dingus Indeed they are. I actually told Jonathan that they sounded like Blink182 when they were good during the Cheshire Cat dayz. They decided to come down to Minneapolis from North Dakota because the scene here had more clubs and opportunities. I saw them open for the Ugly Fat Kids and they blew me away with their crisp beats, killer punk rifts and holy fucking shit bass solos. It brought me back to the time I listened to NOFX and Descendents. This is why it's great to go to live shows. You never know what great band could be just around the corner. And hell, if you tell them you have a podcast, you might even get their cd for free and play it on your next show!! Thanks to Dingus for hooking up the stream with this awesome sounding record and be sure to give them a shout out. If not, you're all bloody wankers and shady hippies as always. Most of the Independent Stream fans are from Japan so we have a Japanese introduction contest by Tim. Guess what the show intro motto is for some free merch. We have some commercial comedy with female products and a message from Frosty who sometimes podcasts on ITradio. Music played by Dingus from their album, "Lunch Break." Deja Vu
Find everything that's Dingus here: http://dingus.bravehost.com
MURPHY CLIVE Youngest band played on the Independent Stream. This is Murphy Clive. A very talented melodic band with an authentic indie sound that brings me back to my Sunnyday Real Estate dayz. I tell a story about Nickelback. Ilona and I chat about one of the guitar players graduation party along with nutsacks. One of her future professions. The Blair Witch Project. Late night trash talk. Give this band a listen. A good mix of the tastes and personalities between the four of them. Within 10 seconds, I bet you'll dig their sound.
PLANET STRUCK I saw these dudes a couple weeks ago at a crackhead dive bar called, The Poodle Club. Everyone laughs when I say that. I probably won't get any free drinks now. But still is a cool place to witness live bands and human nature at its best. As I entered the madness, Planet Strucks loud kick ass music was being cranked out of their amps. Their music has the loud live sound I needed to get through my week of chaos. The guitar was loud and distorted. The bass was timed melodically well and the drummer had way too many red bulls. This band brought me back to the days when I listened to the Helmet album, Born Annoying. And just like those times, I just can't wait to hear what's in store for this band as they record more music in the future. If you live in the Chicago area, I recommend that you get your drink and frustrations on while seeing this band. Thanks to Darrin for hooking me up with the EP.
"Chicago-based sludge metal specialists Planetstruck are not the kind of band you'd want to bring home to meet Mom. Their latest five-track, face-pounding EP makes no bones about it – these boys have some issues. The biggest surprise is their instrumental talent: mature, melodic, and intense, all at once. -Illinois Entertainer review
No frills, no bells & whistles here, just a raw, nasty trip into a swirling vat of tuned-down, dark & viral sludge rock. Made up of members of some various Chicago-area bands, this 3-piece hands down aural hell in the name of 5 ditties such as "White Squall," "The Ham & Eggs Fire" & "Eating Staples" with a stripped down, DIY attitude & packaging. Those into Sleep, Electric Wizard & the like might wanna investigate. Maybe a full-length is in the works?"-Chaos Realm review
Eating Staples

KILL SADIE The band formed in 1997 in the Twin Cities area (Minneapolis/ St. Paul) of Minnesota. An early influence was D.C. band Swiz, who also inspired the faunt used on early releases. Reminiscent of bands like Fugazi and Drive Like Jehu in work ethic and spirit, they pushed away from the hardcore scene that rooted their sound to experiment with adding sonic presence, electronic beats and sampling, as well as multi-layered vocals. The emo genre was in its infancy to the extent that the band were never really included in such a scene, but many credit Kill Sadie with the dark brooding sound it has become today. Always different and fresh, Killsadie's sound ranged from soft ethereal jazz to screaming hardcore. The band mixed these two with stark originality and influenced many before they broke up. The smooth watery bass work and almost harp sounding guitar taps were rare to find in hardcore punk bands, a classification that barely describes the band's style. Their influence can be plainly heard today in everyone from Aiden to The Locust. Their closest contemporaries were probably At the Drive-In, Murder City Devils, or on their lighter side Sunny Day Real Estate.
When I was younger, I was inspired with the singing style of Kill Sadie which later influenced the vocal content of my own music. The music itself had balls and sounded different from any other band here in the Twin Cities area. Their first album Traitor, was only heard on record players. They later transferred that garage punk sound to Cd. After many band members and two records later, Kill Sadie came back with their best sounding third album. The "Experiments And Expectation" album was when the band was at its finest recording moment. A smooth connecting flow of songs . Mellow then loud rythmic guitars. Ambient noises. It was the articulation that I've enjoyed in Fugazi and Sunny Day Real Estate records in the past. These songs brought some fun adventure in my head and found me the will to never lack and even though this world is a piece of shit.... I can still tolerate it. Thanks Kill Sadie!!!
The Independent Stream is now being played in rotation on garagerock101!! Gary Holdsteady celebrates the death of Jerry Falwell by playing a song for a church crowd. He is for sure going to hell now. Interview outside the Varsity Theatre with The Icy Shores. Recorded on 5/10/07 before the Catlick Records Showcase. The sounds of the interview actually make you feel like you're on The Icy Shores of Minneapolis, Minnesota. My recorder sucks balls and I really need to upgrade. Donations??? The Icy Shores are based here in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Some people say it's a mixture of influences ranging from the Afghan Whigs to Radiohead to the Foo Fighters. It's dark and poppy and everything in between. Their songs poke moodily at love and relationships with blasts of distortion coupled with sweet harmonies and intertwining guitars. The Icy Shores first long-player is called "What You Get and How You Get It" and was mixed by audio guru Bryan Hanna (the Hang-Ups, Golden Smog). The end result is an album filled with explosive dark-pop anthems that tightly careen over your senses. Listen to the end of the show for some live Icy Shores from the Catlick Records Showcase that very night!!

Yet another long ass episode dedicated to the Minnesota Music Scene. Gary will be in Florida, the most fucked up state from April 1st-9th recording and trying to murder Mickey Mouse. No shows posted for two weeks until you email and bitch about it.
In episode 15 we have an intro from the Puckertime show. The Threat is Real kicks off the musical goodness. Listener Dan sends in some audio. Thanks dude. Holdsteady Humor-Guess the cover song and win crap from the studio. We compare a song by Xerus to the movie, A Clockwork Orange. Women that Rock!!! Voicemails and random moaning.

If you live in Minnesota you'll have to come out and experience watching these bands perform live and help support the local scene. Let's all get drunk and celebrate great music and the admirable bands that bring it to us. A brief history of this episode.... Knocking off the bullshit and getting to the point. Rex Titer introduces a song. We have a little chat with Dusty from the Ugly Fats Kids. Your Weekly Holdsteady Humor featuring Logan from Samsahra. A great idea gift for Valentines Day called Queefnomore brought to you by your girlfriends vagina. The Podhole chimes in giving Round 13 props. Thanks to all the bands and people that called in. Towards the end their's some Tonnage LIVE to give you a taste of what you're in for Friday night. from
It's February and it goes without saying it's the month of ROUND 13. Why you may ask? Because on February 23rd and 24th it's the ROUND 13 RECORDS SHOWCASE at Club Underground in Minneapolis!! FRIDAY THE 23RD - Starting off the night will be the strange and brilliant music of THE DUNWICH WHORES followed by STURGEON VALLEY NIGHTS (which includes members of 20 Dollar Love and The Summer People) bringing 70's style instrumental Prog Rock via a duel guitar attack and a pounding rhythm section. Next will be the Pop Punk Masters known as THE UGLY FAT KIDS followed by none other than the mighty DROIDS ATTACK and their brand of high energy Stoner Rock. Closing out the first night with TONNAGE bringing the heavy noise rock via the self proclaimed Beard Rock King, the artist formerly known as Dio and Geoff Metal. SATURDAY THE 24TH - The second night starts out with the over driven uncompromising sound of PONEY followed by the beer swilling white trash brilliance of THE SKULLCRANES. Next up will be THE SUMMER PEOPLE playing their psychedelic garage rock in their own special way. And last but not least will be Rex Titer and 20 DOLLAR LOVE, guaranteed to close out this two night party the right way and make your Sunday miserable from a massive hangover. The doors for both night are at 9:00 pm, it's a $5.00 cover and a 21+ event. We got Pabst Blue Ribbon to sponsor the Showcase so you can drink cheap. Also, every Round 13 band will have their merchandise for sale both nights. All the proceeds from the Showcase will be going to finance Round 13's very first compilation CD which will include a studio track from each band and a live song that will be recorded during the Showcase by Adam Tucker. CLUB UNDERGROUND - 355 MONROE ST. NE - MINNEAPOLIS, MN
Ok, that's all the details and I don't want to hear any excuses why you can't make it. Of course if you live outside of Minnesota, we understand. Yet, check out the website at Round13record.net See you there!!
